The Department of Chemical Engineering discusses a master’s thesis on (preparation and characterization of some new heterocyclic compounds containing an oxazolidine ring as inhibitors of corrosion of mild steel in acidic solutions)

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the master’s thesis titled.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Heterocyclic Compounds Containing Oxazolidine Ring as Corrosion Inhibitors for Mild Steel in Acidic Solution

Thursday, 11/2/2023

The student Zeina Ibrahim Jassim’s thesis aimed to synthesize and distinguish heterocyclic organic compounds that possess a thion ring, one of the oxazoladine derivatives, through the synthesis of the compound known as Z1. Later, the compound was synthesized.

4 amino-benzoic hydrazide 5(4-amino phenyl) 1,3,4 oxadiazole – 2thiol

Known as Z2. Then, the known inhibitors (DMOT, DHOT) are prepared, and then the inhibitors that have been synthesized are diagnosed using modern techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a melting point device for the compounds. In addition to evaluating the efficiency of the inhibitors that were synthesized on a model of mild steel to calculate corrosion resistance in one molar HCl acidic medium using the weight loss method. Conditions were used to choose the lowest corrosion rate from the results of the weight loss data. The results showed that the corrosion rate in the absence of the inhibitor increases with increasing temperature, and the change in the corrosion rate with temperature is based on the Arrhenius equation and the activation energy of the reaction was activated. Where work was obtained that shows the extent of the corrosion rate and its relationship to different temperatures and varying concentrations of inhibitors.

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Jamal Mana Ali as Chairman, with the membership of Assistant Prof. Dr. Sarmad Talib Najm from Al-Nahrain University and Assistant Prof. Bashir Ahmed Abdel Hussein

Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Khaled Hamid Rashid and Prof. Dr. Khaleda Farhan Al-Azzawi.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the doctoral thesis.

Organic Solvent Separation from Refinery Wastewater by Pervaporation Process: Experimental, Thermodynamics, Modeling, and Simulation Study

On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the student Salam Hussein Rashid’s thesis aimed to treat water present in refinery waste, where an advanced polydimethylsiloxane membrane (PDMSTM4060) was used to separate soluble benzene (C6H6) and soluble toluene (C7H8) from an aqueous solution. Through the pervaporation process.

A mathematical model of hydrophobic membranes was developed to elucidate the mechanism of transport of organic solvents and water across these membranes and to be able to predict membrane performance under different conditions. The predicted results were validated by experimental data, and in order to predict how non-ideal VOCs and water systems would behave in the PDMS membrane, a UNIQUAC model based on the UNIQUAC model and a conventional driving force model was used to simulate the transport of VOCs and water across the PDMSTM4060 membrane.

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Adnan Abdel-Jabbar Abdel-Razzaq as Chairman, and Prof. Dr. Khaled Murshid Awaid and Prof. Dr. Khaled Turki Rashid and Assist Prof. Dr.  Riad Sadiq Muhammad Saleh and Assist Prof. Dr. Jinan Abdul Karim Abdul Razzaq, under the supervision of Assist Prof. Dr.   Salah Salman Ibrahim and consulting with Professor Dr. Qusay Fadel Abdel Hamid. In addition to the scientific evaluation of the thesis by Prof. Dr. Saleh Abdel-Jabbar Saleh from Al-Qadisiyah University and Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Muhammad from the University of Baghdad. And linguistically by Assist Prof. Dr.   Alaa Abdel Hadi from the University of Technology. The thesis was accepted with a grade of (excellence).

Within the scientific activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Department discusses a master's dissertation on improving phenol degradation of petroleum refinery wastewater by using ozonation process in bubble column reactor. The MSc. dissertation for the student Adnan Kazem Majhoul included:

The ozonation process was studied through the bubble column reactor using four  cases[ (O3 only),  (O3 +  ZnO  Nanocatalyst),  (O3 +  AL2O3)  and  (O3+  ZnO Nanocatalyst  +  AL2O3)]  for  the  purpose  of  degradation  of  phenol  from  the  wastewater  of  petroleum  refineries and the study of hydrodynamics, mass transfer  (work Mathematical model and reaction kinetics to find out the optimal conditions  for the performance of the bubble column reactor, where it became clear that the  fourth case is the most consistent between the practical and theoretical results and removes the highest percentage of the phenol pollutant with high concentrations

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Amer Aziz Abdul Rahman, chairman, Prof. Dr. Zainab yousif shnain, member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Shaima Abdel Rahman Ahmed, member, and under the supervision of both Prof. Dr. Khalid Ajmi Sukkar and Asst. Prof. Dr. may ali muslim.
