Within the scientific activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Department discusses a master's dissertation on the combined effect of air bubbles and ultraviolet irradiation process on BTEX removal in synthetic produced water, on Tuesday 8/11/2022. The MSc. dissertation for the student (Marwa Abdul Karim Haider) included:

The Combined Effect of Air Bubbles and Ultraviolet Irradiation Process on BTEX Removal In synthetic Produced Water

The study aims to improve the method of photo catalysis by using air bubbles at different flow rates during different time periods, as well as choosing the appropriate medium (basic or acidic) and choosing the appropriate light intensity. The laboratory results showed that the best removal rate was 93% at the pH function 5, time 90 minutes, and a flow rate of 3 l/min. The Characterization Analysis also showed (FTIR, XRD, EDX, Contact angle) the success of using an aluminum plate on which the catalyst (TIO2) was installed using an adhesive (varnish).

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Fadel Abd, chairman, Asst. Prof. Dr. Jenan Abdulkarem Abdulrazak, member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Hussein Ali Hamid, member, and under the supervision of both Prof. Dr. Asawer Abdulrasool Kwae and Asst. Prof. Dr. Zainab yousif shnain. As well as the scientific evaluation of the dissertation was done by Prof. Dr. Rahik Ismail Ibrahim from the University of Technology and Prof. Dr. Iyad Abdul Hamza Faisal from Baghdad University, and linguistically by Lect. Dr. Abbas Jawad Sultan from the University of Technology.

The Department of Chemical Engineering begins applying new work mechanisms in scientific laboratories.

In the field of continuous work of the Department of Chemical Engineering to develop the scientific and practical impact of scientific laboratories, the thermodynamic laboratory began applying modern scientific methods in order to develop the reality of the quality of scientific laboratories in the department. The initiative included that the staff of the thermodynamic laboratory, including scientific and practical supervisors and members of engineers, apply the participation of a part of the students in delivering laboratory experiments in the form of seminars, as well as the participation of other students in evaluation and making observations related to scientific curricula and method of recitation, as it is a new work mechanism that contributes to the development of scientific capabilities and skills among students, as well as enhancing aspects of scientific research and developing their confidence.

The Department of Chemical Engineering is discussing a master's thesis on the engineering of chemical reactions for the decomposition of phosphorous organic substances.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the master's thesis entitled "Engineering of Chemical Reactions for the Decomposition of Phosphorous Organic Substances".

The thesis of student (Muslim Hassan Allawi) aimed to study one of the advanced oxidation processes (AOP), the most important of which is ultrasonic irradiation to remove pollutants from aqueous solutions. An ultrasound device with a fixed frequency of 26.6 kHz was used. Two substances were used in this study, diisopropyl methylphosphonate and malathion. It has been observed during the irradiation processes that both materials are affected by some variables, including pH, initial concentration, time and concentration of carbon tetrachloride additive. Five concentrations of each substance (7, 14, 30, 50 and 80 ppm) were used for diisopropyl methylphosphonate (45, 28, 17, 8.4 ppm) for malathion, at different pH levels (2, 7, and 10)) for both subjects and at different times (90, 80, 60, 45, 30, 15, 0 minutes). The best degradation was observed at the basal degree 10PH for both materials, different concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 g/L) were used for (80 ppm diisopropyl methylphosphonate) and (45 ppm for malathion) at a basal temperature of 10 pH. And the study of its decomposition and proved that the best auxiliary concentration for the semi-complete decomposition is 0.8 g/L for each of the two substances and a time of 45 minutes, the decomposition efficiency at that time was 98% for diisopropyl methyl phosphonate and for 60 minutes also the decomposition efficiency at that time was 98% for malathion. The kinetic modeling of (zero, first, and second degree) was studied and it was found that it is of the first degree that produced an R2 correction factor (0.967) greater than the other type and close to one.

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Alaa Karim Mohamed as a chairman, and the membership of Assist. Prof. Dr. Farah Talib Jassim and Dr. Manal Afham Touma and under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Riyad Sadiq Muhammad and Dr. Muhammad Abdul Rahman Muhammad. In addition, the scientific evaluation of the thesis was by Prof. Dr. Saad Hanash Ammar from Al-Nahrain University and Prof. Dr. Sobhi Abdul-Sattar Hassan from Wasit University.
