Dr. Adnan A. Abdul-Razak, Deputy Dean of the Chemical Engineering Department, was promoted from Assistant Professor to the rank of Professor. On this occasion,  the President of the University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmed M. H. Abdulkadhim Al-Ghaban, faculty members and staff of the department have congratulated him, and they wish him continued success.

Within the scientific and cultural activities of the first semester for the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Lect. Dr.  Layth Salem was given a lecture related to his research under the title: Characterization of the multiphase flow system by using advanced non-invasive gamma-ray techniques, The presentation was provided inside Al-Khwarizmi Hall on Thursday 7-11-2019 in the presence of the head of chemical engineering department; Asst. Prof. Dr. Khalid Ajami Sukkar., and Asst. Prof. Dr. Adnan Abdul Jabbar; scientific deputy of the head of department, and Lect. Dr. Wallaa Abdel Hady; administrative deputy of the head of department, as well as the heads of the branches with a number of staff from the department in addition to the postgraduate students. The lecturer said that the results of this research are led to the fact that multiphase flow reactors regarding hydrodynamics parameters (flow dynamics) have an extreme impact on the reactor's performance and therefore their productivity.  Thus we need extensively doing research on this kind of parameters by doing disgusting in non-invasive manner gamma-ray technique, for example, Radioactive particle (RPT), Gamma-ray densitometry (GRD) and computed tomography (CT) techniques. These kinds of valuable techniques give deep and crucial information that helps us to improve the design and thus the yield of the reactors such bubble column, slurry bubble column with and without dense internals, fluidized bed, spouted bed, Photobioreactors (including culturing system such as algae as part on renewable energy).

Chemical Engineering Department held a training workshop for faculty members and the staff of the labs on the programing by Matlab to achieve the reliability of educational laboratories (GLP). This workshop was held on Thursday, December 9, 2019, in Ibn Al-Rushd hall at Chemical Engineering Department. Miss Nahla Fadel, the instructor of computer programming class, has given this workshop.

Mahmoud Sabah Hassan, a master student at the Chemical Engineering Department, has defended his thesis entitled:  Preparation of Activated Carbon from Iraqi Waste Date-Pits as an Adsorbent for Organic Pollutants in Petroleum Refinery Wastewater. The defense of his thesis was held on December 5, 2019, at Al-Khwarizmi Hall in the Department of the Chemical Engineering/University of Technology. Her discussion committee has consisted of the following members:

  1. Prof. Dr. Wadud Taher Muhammad/Chair
  2. Asst. Prof. Jenan Abdel Karim Abdel Razzaq/member
  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Khalid Turki Rashid/member
  4. Prof. Dr. Thamer Jasim Mohamed/Advisor
  5. Prof. Dr. Rafeh Rushdie Mohamed/Advisor

Large quantities of water used in Petroleum refining to produce useful products. discharge of untreated Petroleum Refining Wastewater (PRW) into water bodies’ results in environmental and human health effects.  Adsorption is one of the most effective techniques of advanced wastewater treatment to decrease COD, oil, TPH and turbidity in wastewater. The most widely used method is adsorption using activated carbon. The Activated Carbon (AC) prepare from the Iraqi Date-pits by different methods of carbonization and activation. The optimum BET surface area has been predicted 519.37 m2/g. AC sample used in treatment of the PRW which is taken from Al-Qayyarah petroleum refinery in Mosul/Iraq. Different parameters, such as Adsorbent doses, pH, COD, Turbidity and TPH were studied within the Adsorption experiments.

Recently, Prof. Dr.Talib M. Albayati has published his study in Process Safety and Environmental Protection Journal titled " Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorption from wastewater using different types of prepared mesoporous materials MCM-41in batch and fixed bed column ". This international journal has an impact factor of 4.38 under Elsevier publisher.
