Based on the directives of the University of Technology regarding the implementation of the government program in the field of governance and e-government, the Department of Chemical Engineering organized a scientific lecture entitled (E-governance and enhancing software systems in academic work) delivered by Engineer Zaid Kareem Hussein. The session was moderated by Dr. Walaa Abdel Hadi Nouri, Director of the Training Unit in the Chemical Engineering Department. The lecturer gave a detailed presentation on electronic governance and how to reduce time and effort in completing scientific, academic and administrative work in universities. The lecturer also touched on the importance of protecting software systems in e-government systems because of its role in avoiding operational problems and reducing breaches or any potential malfunctions. At the end of the lecture, the lecturer was honored with a certificate of appreciation for his efforts in delivering the lecture.

Within the scientific activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Department discusses a PhD thesis entitled (Hydro-Treating of Gasoil in a Dual Bed Reactor Consisting of Metal Loaded Catalysts Made of Iraqi Kaolin and Bentonite Clays), on Thursday 18/04/2024. The PhD thesis for the student Ayman Fawzi Zwain included removing sulfur compounds from Iraqi gas oil. A laboratory system was used that simulates industrial conditions with catalysts prepared from Iraqi kaolin and bentonite clays. Different proportions of nickel, cobalt and molybdenum metals were added to the catalysts and the reaction was conducted over a wide and varied range of operating conditions to study their effect on removal efficiency. The best sulfur removal rate of 93.38% was achieved. Mathematical models have also been developed to simulate these reactions and remove coke from spent catalysts. The results showed a clear improvement in the process of removing sulfur compounds as a result of the use of two layers of catalysts inside the reactor, in addition to providing a complete view of the optimal conditions for the process of reactivating the catalysts and removing the coke accumulated on their surfaces.

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Amer Aziz Abdul Rahman, chairman, Prof. Dr. Ramzi Sayhoud Hameed, member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rana Thabet Abboud, member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Farah Talib Jasim, member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Haiyam Mohammed Abdalraheem, member,  and under the supervision of both Prof. Dr. Zaidoon Mohsin Shakor  and Prof. Dr. Bashir Yousif Sherhan. As well as the scientific evaluation of the thesis was done by Prof. Dr. Saad Hanash Ammar from Al-Nahrain University /Department of Chemical Engineering and Prof. Dr. Acer Talib Jarallah Shaaban from Tikrit University /Department of Chemical Engineering, and linguistically by Prof. Dr. Najm Abdul Kadhim Al-Rubaie from the University of Technology.

Under the patronage of the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the twelfth exhibition for security, defense and military industries was opened on Saturday, April 20, 2024, on the grounds of the Baghdad International Fair. Prof. Dr. Khalid Ajmi Sukkar Abd Al-Rubay, Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, participated in the opening of the exhibition. On the sidelines of the exhibition, a meeting was held with the Minister of the Military Industrialization Authority, Engineer Mustafa Ati Hassan, and with the general directors of the Authority. The Minister praised the scientific and pioneering role of the presidency of the University of Technology in the fruitful scientific cooperation that serves our dear country. The meeting was attended by Prof. Hashim Sharif Nehme from the Materials Engineering Department. It is noteworthy that the current session of the exhibition included the participation of many national companies, directorates and institutions, as well as major foreign companies specialized in the field of security and defense.

In light of the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and under the direct supervision of the President of the University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Al Ghabban, the Department of Chemical Engineering completed joint exams with universities and private colleges that have scientific twinning in the specialty of oil refining engineering, on Saturday, 20/04/2024. Prof. Dr. Khalid Ajmi Sukkar, Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, explained that the students of the Chemical Engineering and Oil Refining Branch (except for the first stage) participated in the joint exams with the students of Al-Mustaqbal University, the students of Al-Turath University, and the students of Al-Farabi College. The quarterly exams were joint and at the same time and were conducted under the supervision of specialized scientific committees of faculty members in the Chemical Engineering Department who were sent to field supervise the performance of the exams in the joint exam sites of the aforementioned colleges and universities. It should be noted that the joint examinations between the two parties come within the procedures to activate the memorandums of understanding signed between the two parties based on the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in order to strengthen and activate twinning in a serious manner and ensure the desired scientific integrity.

Within the activities of the program to develop scientific research skills for postgraduate students, which was launched by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for postgraduate students in Iraqi universities and in cooperation with the office of the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies. The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology organized a workshop on writing scientific research entitled. Paraphrasing and summarizing on Sunday, 21/04/2024. The workshop included a lecture by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ban Kazem Abdel/English Language Specialist. The lecture provided a detailed presentation on the steps of writing research and how to quote, abbreviate, and rephrase the research. A number of postgraduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) participated in the workshop. The program for developing scientific research skills for postgraduate students is the first program in Iraq that was approved by the University of Technology since the year 2020-2021. It is offered exclusively to students in the research stage. It has also been approved for postgraduate students in Iraqi universities, starting from the year 2023-2024, and under the supervision of the Research and Development Department, to enable all university students to acquire academic tools and skills in the English language.
