Within the scientific activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Department discusses a M.Sc. Dissertation entitled (Improving TiO2 Photocatalysts for Degradation of Toxic Organics from aqueous solution Using Solar Reactor) on Thursday, 28/12/2023. The M.Sc. Dissertation for the student Rahma Dawoud Salman included:

(This thesis aimed to modify titanium dioxide particles with copper, iron, and carbon in new proposed ways. These modified catalysts manufactured were characterized using (FTIR, EDS, and SEM) techniques, and then these modified photocatalysts were used in the process of heterogeneous photocatalysis by coating on a fixed aluminum substrate for removing phenol and furfural using an adhesive (varnish). The effect of several variables was studied, such as the initial concentration of pollutants, the pH of the solution, the catalyst loading percentage, and the intensity of lighting. The results showed that the best removal percentage for phenol was 95.2% in the acidic environment and 96.63% for furfural in the basic environment at a time of 120 minutes)

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Asawer Abdulrasool Kwae, chairman, Asst. Prof. Dr. Alyaa khadhier mageed, member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ammar Arab Beday, member,  and under the supervision of both Prof. Dr. Zainab yousif shnain and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fadel Abd. As well as the scientific evaluation of the dissertation was done by Prof. Dr. Ali Hussein Abbar from the University of Baghdad and Prof. Dr. Kazem Matar Shabib from the University of Technology, and linguistically by Asst. Prof. Dr. Farooq Ahmed Mehdi from the University of Technology.

Study the Effects of Various Operating Parameters on the Creating Biomass via Microalgae to Remove Methylene Blue Dye and Mercury from Synthetic Wastewater in Airlift Reactor
The student's thesis (Ali Hussein Ali) aimed to produce biomass from modified green algae inside a set of photobioreactors in order to use it as an inexpensive adsorbent to remove mercury ions and methylene blue dye from industrial wastewater in the air bridge reactor. The highest removal efficiency achieved was 95.7% and 98.9% for mercury ions and methylene blue dye, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity was 750 μg/g for mercury and 30 mg/g for methylene blue, obtained in the best conditions. The results of the examination (FTIR, SEM, EDS) also showed the efficiency of this method in removing pollutants.

Within the University of Technology program aimed at promoting sustainability and the green university, and under the patronage of Professor Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Hassan Al-Ghabban, President of the University of Technology, the volunteer work of the Green Technology Team in the Chemical Engineering Department to plant seasonal plant seedlings was supervised on Thursday, 1/4/2024, in the presence of members of the University Council. Technological. The university president stressed the high interest in the issue of sustainability in engineering and scientific applications, as it constitutes an important foundation in the university’s technological goals for a green university. On the other hand, the university president praised the volunteer work carried out by the green technology team of students and professors of scientific branches in the Department of Chemical Engineering because of its role in promoting environmental culture. It is worth noting that the Green Technology Team was established in the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2018 and is concerned with green environmental activities and promoting the concept of sustainability in academic work and engineering designs.

Within the cultural and scientific program of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Technology. The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit organized a scientific lecture entitled Drugs and their negative impact on youth and society. On Wednesday, 1/3/2024.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Haneen Hamid Ismail from the Baghdad Health Department, Al-Karkh, Martyr Muhammad Baqir Al-Hakim Hospital. During which a detailed presentation was presented on the phenomenon of drug abuse and its serious effects on the health and safety of individuals, as it is a psychological and sometimes organic condition resulting from human interaction with the drug. The types of abuse and its relationship to addiction were also discussed and the most prominent influential factors that push individuals towards drug abuse, which include the nature of the family environment and weak inhibitions. Religion, economic status, level of education, and prevailing culture. In conclusion, the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Professor Dr. Khaled Ajami Sukkar, awarded a certificate of appreciation to the lecturer in appreciation of his efforts in delivering the lecture, calling on all students and associates to confront this dangerous phenomenon, to curb it and eliminate it, as it is an alien phenomenon to the individual and society in our dear country.
