Written by zaid kareemThe Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the doctoral thesis.
Organic Solvent Separation from Refinery Wastewater by Pervaporation Process: Experimental, Thermodynamics, Modeling, and Simulation Study
On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the student Salam Hussein Rashid’s thesis aimed to treat water present in refinery waste, where an advanced polydimethylsiloxane membrane (PDMSTM4060) was used to separate soluble benzene (C6H6) and soluble toluene (C7H8) from an aqueous solution. Through the pervaporation process.
A mathematical model of hydrophobic membranes was developed to elucidate the mechanism of transport of organic solvents and water across these membranes and to be able to predict membrane performance under different conditions. The predicted results were validated by experimental data, and in order to predict how non-ideal VOCs and water systems would behave in the PDMS membrane, a UNIQUAC model based on the UNIQUAC model and a conventional driving force model was used to simulate the transport of VOCs and water across the PDMSTM4060 membrane.
The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Adnan Abdel-Jabbar Abdel-Razzaq as Chairman, and Prof. Dr. Khaled Murshid Awaid and Prof. Dr. Khaled Turki Rashid and Assist Prof. Dr. Riad Sadiq Muhammad Saleh and Assist Prof. Dr. Jinan Abdul Karim Abdul Razzaq, under the supervision of Assist Prof. Dr. Salah Salman Ibrahim and consulting with Professor Dr. Qusay Fadel Abdel Hamid. Within the scientific activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Department discusses a master's dissertation on improving phenol degradation of petroleum refinery wastewater by using ozonation process in bubble column reactor. The MSc. dissertation for the student Adnan Kazem Majhoul included:
The ozonation process was studied through the bubble column reactor using four cases[ (O3 only), (O3 + ZnO Nanocatalyst), (O3 + AL2O3) and (O3+ ZnO Nanocatalyst + AL2O3)] for the purpose of degradation of phenol from the wastewater of petroleum refineries and the study of hydrodynamics, mass transfer (work Mathematical model and reaction kinetics to find out the optimal conditions for the performance of the bubble column reactor, where it became clear that the fourth case is the most consistent between the practical and theoretical results and removes the highest percentage of the phenol pollutant with high concentrations

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the master's thesis tagged.
Fabrication of PVC-PA thin film forward osmosis membrane for direct fertigation applications
The student Bakr Mohamed Ibrahim's thesis aimed to fabricate composite thin films and evaluate them in the FO process for direct composting applications. PVC films with porous top surface structure were prepared in different concentrations by phase inversion process. While the PA thin film was prepared on the top porous surface of PVC substrate using interfacial polymerization reaction with different concentrations and reaction times to improve the performance of FO. A comprehensive characterization of the membranes was also carried out. The results showed that the water flow of the composite thin films improved with the reduction of the amount of PVC. It also showed an improvement in water flow while reducing the concentration and reaction time of the PA layer. Also, the effect of several variables on membrane performance was studied, including membrane orientation, flow rate, draw solution concentration, and feed solution concentration. It has been demonstrated that using a membrane with a porous superstructure surface as a substrate is a reasonable strategy for preparing a high-performance FO membrane.
