Within the scientific and cultural activities for the first semester of the Department of Chemical Engineering for the academic year 2019-2020, a master’s student, a lecture was given by Kholoud Salem Dawood entitled:

Preparation of composite-modified Iraq clays for the hydro desulfurization of heavy fuels

And that was in the presence of the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Assist. Prof. Dr. Jamal Manea Al-Rubaie, Distinguished Greeters, Branch Heads, and a number of teaching staff, employers, and master’s students in Al-Khwarizmi Hall on Thursday, January ninth, 2020.

The oil refining industry has considerably grown during the 20th century to become an important part of everyday modern activity. One of the main objectives of heavy fuels processing is to reduce their very high sulfur ratio. This project aims to prepare and characterize different types of catalysts using kaolin Iraq's clay (metakaolin materials with big pores from natural clays of Iraq).

Metakaolin was introduced into alumina as a composite support for hydrodesulfurization process and use series of the active metal (e.g. nickel, iron, cobalt, silver, copper and molybdenum). The catalyst was prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR, pore volume and BET surface area. Their hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activity for heavy fuels (gas oil) were evaluated and compared in different parameters (temperature, pressure etc.) by a fixed bed reactor while kinetics of the HDS reaction was studied using the different catalysts separately. Apply this process through a mathematical model.

 

Opening the scientific cooperation between the Chemical Engineering Department and the Ministry of Defense

Mr. Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Assist. Prof. Jamal Manea Ali Al-Rubaie, met a delegation from the Ministry of Defense represented by Dean Dr. Muhammad Abdul Rahman, director of research and development at the Planning Directorate and engineer dean Nazem Jihad from the Directorate of Electrical Mechanical Engineering and the meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Khaled Ajami Sukkar. During the meeting, matters of scientific communication were discussed between the Chemical Engineering Department and the Ministry of Defense. The head of the department accompanied the delegation to meet the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Al-Ghabban on Sunday January 5th, 2020. The visit included opening up scientific cooperation between the two parties in topics that serve the community because with what has been distinguished by the Technological University of the laboratories of scientific expertise and advanced in all disciplines, especially in the field of nanotechnology.

Entitled: Computational and experimental study of hydrodynamic and heat Transfer for the binary mix of solid particles in a three-phase fluid bed reactor

The hydrodynamic characteristics and heat behavior were investigated in a co-current gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed containing a binary mixture of particles. A three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) fluidized bed was used to study the hydrodynamic characteristics (pressure drop, phase hold up, minimum fluidization velocity, bed expansion and rise bubble velocity) of the particle (glass beads) with different diameters (4,5,6,8, and10) mm using water as liquid phase and air as the gas phase. The experiments were carried out in a 0.115m ID, a 2 m-height vertical Perspex column. The column consisted of three sections (gas–liquid separation, test and gas–liquid distributor). Heat transfer characteristics in three-phase fluidized beds for an immersed vertical cylindrical heater were studied at steady state conditions. Determining experimentally the heat coefficient in Gas-liquid-solid fluidized-beds and studying the influence of some variables, such as particle size, heat flux, heater position and fluidizing velocity. Then Theoretical analysis and CFD simulation of a fluidized bed reactor for prediction of hydrodynamic properties and heat transfer parameters.

Within the activities of the scientific and cultural activities for the first semester of the Chemical Engineering Department for the academic year 2019-2020, PhD student Areej Delph gave a lecture entitled:

 Evaluation of the impact of nanoparticle additives on the performance of multi-phase flow systems in the oil and gas sector

And that is on Ibn Al-Rushd Hall, where the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Jamal Manea Ali, associate masters, branch heads, and a number of teaching staff, employees, and masters students, on Thursday, 2/1/2020, the research aims to study the effect of nanotechnology additives on the flow of crude oil and its rheological properties in multi-stage systems in the oil industry in order to reduce pressure drop in pipelines Transporting crude oil, which increases productivity and reduces pumps ’energy consumption, thereby reducing pumping costs

Chemical Engineering Department / University of Technology welcomed Professor Dr. Muhammad Hillil, President of the Oil and Gas University in Basra Governorate, on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. He was welcomed by Mr. Head of the Chemical Engineering Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Jamal Manea Al-Rubaie, the scientific assistant, Prof. Dr. Adnan Abdul-Jabbar and Assist. Prof. Dr.  Khaled Ajami Sukkar the Chairman of the Department and blessed his visit to the department. During the visit, a discussion was made on the mechanism of cooperation that will be signed between the University of Technology and the University of Oil and Gas.

The Division of Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation in the Department of Chemical Engineering held a training workshop entitled (an improvement plan according to the axes of the national classification form for the academic year 2018/2019)

Within the activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering for the first semester of the academic year 2019/2020, the Division of Quality and Performance Evaluation in the Department of Chemical Engineering held a workshop entitled “Plan for improvement according to the axes of the National Classification Form for the academic year 2018/2019” in Dar Al Salam Hall on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. The workshop was attended by the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering Prof. Jamal Manea Al-Rubaie, Heads of Branches, and an elite of the department’s professors and employers while a lecture was delivered by the Director of the Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation Division Lecturer Dr. May Muslim, and the workshop included three axes, namely (scientific research), (quality improvement and programmatic accreditation) and (scientific activities).

The volunteer team in the Chemical Engineering Department, which includes an elite group of teachers and students visited Mother Teresa's home for severely handicapped children in Al-Karrada / Baghdad on Thursday, January 16th, 2020. The head of the department, Prof. Dr. Jamal Manea Al-Rubaie met members of the team, blessed them for this beautiful initiative and called to increase humanitarian initiatives in this field.
